Flagpole Mountain is located in the very north-west corner of Pushmataha County, Oklahoma. Push county is part of greater southeast Oklahoma. The closest towns to Flagpole Mountain are Clayton, Talihina, and Tuskahoma. Flagpole Mountain helps form the southern edge of Sardis Lake. Sardis is a fantastic fishing and recreational spot with Core of Engineers camps located all around the lake perimeter.

Tuskahoma is a town just a few miles east of Clayton and was/is the Choctaw Nation Capital. Their fantastic Capital building onsite is also the Choctaw Museum.

Pushmataha County was created from Choctaw Indian land when Oklahoma became a state and named in honor of Choctaw Chief Pushmataha.

Explore native American Indian relics at local sites and museums, or go ape over Bigfoot, or hike where famous gangsters stashed their loot at nearby Robbers Cave State Park. Go see the Heavner Runestone – remember the Vikings were here a long time ago too!

Clayton, Oklahoma defines the western-edge starting point of the famous K-Trail, aka Kiamichi Trail. You can 4×4 all the way to Mena, Arkansas.

Sardis lake was built in the late 1970s early 1980s and is managed by the Core of Engineers. Fisheries department stocked it with game fish back then and now has some of the best black bass and crappie fishing around. There is also over 8,000 acres of public hunting land in the surrounding area available during the hunting seasons.

Along your way through SE Oklahoma, look out for black bear and mountain lion, roadrunners and turkeys, tarantulas and a bunch of other critters. And rocks. Lots of rocks. Lots of big rocks. There are even off-road trails right at the bottom of Flagpole Mountain! Green Acres is one of the best 4-wheel rock climbing places in America, and it happens to be located the edge of town at the bottom of Flagpole Mountain!

If you are looking for total peace and quiet with sky so dark you can see the Milky Way, this is the spot.
